Over the next school year, the Department of Education will double the number of public schools participating in an experimental model created with education unions, Mayor de Blasio said May 26.
The “PROSE” schools—Progressive Redesign Opportunity Schools for Excellence—were created under last year’s United Federation of Teachers and Council of School Supervisors and Administrators contracts to give district schools flexibility similar to that enjoyed by charters. That can include longer school days, college-preparation courses, varying class sizes and other modifications to union rules. Mr. de Blasio called it “a national model for reform.”
