Bucking conservatives in his own party, Speaker John Boehner March 3 reversed course and shepherded a bill through the U.S. House of Representatives to fund the Homeland Security Department through September.
Four days earlier, the department had come within two hours of a shutdown. House conservatives had added riders to the agency’s funding bill that would have blocked President Obama’s immigration plan. Mr. Boehner and Democratic leaders passed a one-week funding extension just in time.
