Mayor de Blasio last week announced a $22-million program to reduce violence by people who are seriously mentally ill by having city agencies work together to get them treatment before they reach a crisis stage.
“Some in the media have tried to portray this as about the homeless first and foremost,” Mr. de Blasio said at a roundtable-style press conference Aug. 6 to explain the program, NYC SAFE. “No, it is about people who have mental-health challenges and are prone to violence. They are a concern to all of us, whether they live in an apartment building, a private home, a shelter or on the street.”
