Retired Deputy Chief David McCormack, a former president of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, died April 25 at the age of 83, leaving behind a decades-long legacy in fire safety in addition to his labor work.
The officers’ union released a statement telling of Mr. McCormack’s birth in Brooklyn to Irish immigrants in 1931, his enlistment in the Navy at age 17, and his rise through the FDNY ranks, beginning as a Firefighter in 1954. He became the department’s youngest Captain in 1965; by 1968, he’d risen to be the youngest Battalion Chief in the FDNY’s history.
