A group of adjunct instructors at the City University of New York is pushing for paid family leave for employees who lack the benefit already given to full-time CUNY staff.
In 2009, the Professional Staff Congress, CUNY’s largest union, became the first public-sector union to get paid parental leave. Full-time employees receive eight weeks of paid leave after a birth or adoption at full pay, but this policy doesn’t apply to adjuncts, who are considered part-timers. About 60 percent of CUNY instructors are adjuncts, and just over half are women, with younger educators more likely to be female.
