A Manhattan jury Aug. 6 acquitted City Council Member Jumaane D. Williams on two of three charges related to his role in the Jan. 11 attempt to thwart Federal immigration officials’ efforts to detain and deport immigration-rights activist Ravi Ragbir.
The jury convicted Mr. Williams of obstructing an FDNY ambulance that had been called after Mr. Ragbir fainted when he was informed by Immigration Customs and Enforcement it was going to deport him immediately to his native Trinidad. For several years, despite a standing order for his deportation, a regular check-in with Federal immigration authorities was sufficient to permit Mr. Ragbir to remain in this country.
