At a City Council hearing Feb. 8 on the FDNY’s efforts to diversify its ranks, Speaker Corey Johnson was sharply critical of the agency’s track record, saying its performance lagged behind other city agencies and fire departments across the country.
“We also know from the Department of Citywide Administrative Services that the Fire Department is one of the least-diverse agencies in the city,” he said. “Only 30 percent of the FDNY workforce is non-white, compared to 61 percent of the NYPD and 86 percent of the Department of Corrections. The FDNY is just simply out of step with other city agencies.”
