Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte told a City Council hearing March 24 that he needed to hire 2,000 new Correction Officers next year to deal with an expanded mission, current vacancies and anticipated retirements.
But under questioning from Elizabeth Crowley, chair of the Council’s Public Safety Committee, he conceded that the department’s training facilities and applicant-investigations unit were not sufficient to deal with an influx of new COs.
