Community-Schools Initiative Funded To Assist Turnaround

As the de Blasio administration announced plans to spend more money on 130 struggling and turnaround schools last week, the Department of Education released long-awaited guidelines on its community-schools expansion.

The increase would, over two years, fully fund 94 “renewal” schools and those classified as persistently failing to meet “fair student funding” guidelines devised by the DOE. The aid increase can be used to hire Guidance Counselors and Teachers, extend the school day or add advanced-placement classes.
