Commissioner Says 80 Parks Officers Face July Layoffs

Citing new reports detailing crime in more than 1,000 parks and recreation facilities, advocates and the local representing Parks Enforcement Patrol officers say the city needs to spend more money to prevent a major layoff of the parks-based peace officers and keep visitors safe.

Under the budget proposed by the de Blasio administration for the year that begins in July, about 80 PEP officers would lose their jobs, Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mitchell Silver said during a City Council hearing earlier this month. The Council allocated $5 million last year to fund those positions.
