For Lance Winfield, a 20-year Emergency Medical Technician in the FDNY, it was an ordinary morning at the office.

He had just arrived at his job on Aug. 4, 2014 and was headed to a back room to speak to a supervisor when he noticed a small cluster of office-mates gathered around a co-worker’s desk. This didn’t appear to be a casual chat: they seemed concerned.
