The Trump Administration’s apparent decision July 2 to drop its appeal of a court ruling preventing it from including a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. Census was hailed by State Attorney General Letitia James, who had made New York a plaintiff in one of several lawsuits looking to block a move that figured to reduce the 10-year population count and reduce both Federal aid and the state’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Today’s news is a victory for New York State, for America, and for every single person in this nation,” Ms. James said in a statement following U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’s decision to begin printing Census questionnaires without the citizenship question. “While the Trump Administration may have attempted to politicize the Census and punish cities and states across the nation, justice prevailed, and the Census will continue to remain a tool for obtaining an accurate count of our population.”
