Can’t ‘Stop’ Council Overriders: Re-Elect 2 by Wide Margins

After the City Council passed the Community Safety Act for the first time, police unions who disapproved of the bills creating an Inspector General and expanding the right to sue over profiling promised to work against candidates who supported it.

At the forefront was the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, which targeted three incumbents: Dan Garodnick and Jessica Lappin of Manhattan and Mark Weprin of Queens. The union distributed fliers and mailed leaflets in their districts, urging constituents not to vote for them unless they changed their votes when the Council sought to override the expected veto from Mayor Bloomberg.
