Call for More Teachers of Color As Outrage at Principal's Actions Grows

A group of Teachers and education activists rallied outside of the Department of Education’s Chambers St. headquarters Feb. 13 to urge the de Blasio administration to make schools more equitable by boosting black-history lessons and hiring more black Teachers, even as anger grew over a Principal at I.S. 224 in the Bronx allegedly discouraging both students and Teachers from marking Black History Month.

Though the rally was planned as part of a series of events highlighting inequalities in the school system and celebrating black history, that and another racially-charged incident added a sense of urgency to the movement.
