Back on April 20, during a breakfast with some reporters who cover the NYPD, Sergeants Benevolent Association President Edward D. Mullins issued his first public call for William J. Bratton to step down.
He said that would be the best way for the Police Commissioner to take “responsibility for what’s been occurring in the NYPD the past two weeks,” referring to the then-burgeoning scandal involving the alleged trading of gifts for favors from two Orthodox Jewish businessmen that had prompted internal discipline against nine cops, including four Deputy Chiefs and two Deputy Inspectors.
