Assembly Votes For 3-Year Extension Of Mayoral Control

Though he’d advocated for permanent control of city schools, Mayor de Blasio praised the May 18 passage of a State Assembly bill that would extend the provision through 2018.

If similar legislation was passed by the State Senate and signed by Governor Cuomo, it would be half the length of the previous extension, passed in 2009. But it could also take the issue off the table as the State Legislature considers raising the charter-school cap and setting up a tax break, proposed by Mr. Cuomo, that would largely benefit those who donate to, or whose children attend, religious and other private schools.
