Though a new contract may still be months away, 200,000 postal workers moved a step closer to the goal when the American Postal Workers Union announced that it will enter arbitration with the U.S. Postal Service on Feb. 17.
The stakes are high. According to the APWU, management is looking for major givebacks, including a virtual end to the union’s no-layoff clause and fewer annual leave and sick days. The USPS is seeking a new tier of employees who wouldn’t receive cost-of-living adjustments, and lower COLAs for current workers.
