Anxious But Not Sitting Back, UFT's Members Reach Out in Building Unity

The United Federation of Teachers’ door-knocking campaign that was started to warn members about the ramifications of a potential state Constitutional Convention never stopped after the ballot provision was voted down, thanks to the threat of a Supreme Court case that will determine whether public-sector unions can continue to collect agency-fee payments from nonmembers.

Back in August, about 175 educators were trained for the campaign to inform members about the risks of the proposal to revise the state constitution. After New Yorkers voted overwhelmingly against the proposition, the focus of the movement shifted to Janus v. AFSCME, the Supreme Court case that could potentially end agency-fee payments by nonmembers. So far, the recruits have knocked on 20,000 fellow educators’ doors.
