The story of Lieut. Giuseppe (Joseph) Petrosino is well-known. He was the turn-of-the-century NYPD detective who led the department’s efforts to combat Italian organized crime, and was assassinated in 1909 during a trip to Sicily to investigate the Mafia.
Less well-known is that he was forced to devote much of his energy to battling anti-Italian prejudice in the NYPD and in the city and Federal governments.
