Police arrested more than 40 members of the Professional Staff Congress and two City Council Members during a March 24 “die-in” demonstration outside Governor Cuomo’s Midtown offices.
The protesters were objecting to working under a contract that expired in 2010, as well as the growing use of tuition increases at the City University of New York to make up for lagging state funding. They were also alarmed about a potential $485-million cut in state funds, but the Governor’s Office discounted that, saying Albany would cover the full $1.6 billion in aid for the university.
