American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten celebrated the House Committee on Education and Labor’s amendment of a bill that would protect health-care and social-service workers from workplace violence.
Almost 75 percent of the 25,000 workplace assaults reported each year occurred in the health care and social service fields, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The rate of injuries from workplace violence in health care settings increased from 7.8 per 10,000 workers in 2013 to 9.1 in 2017, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
