MaryEllen Elia was largely praised by both Teachers’ unions and charter-school supporters after the state Board of Regents unanimously voted May 26 to approve the former Hillsborough County, Fla. Superintendent as State Education Commissioner.
When she takes the post July 6, she will replace Elizabeth Berlin, who temporarily filled in after Commissioner John B. King left at the end of last year to take a job in the Obama Administration. She will arrive as the state Education Department begins to retool Teacher evaluations under a budget law passed two months ago, and as unions and parent groups opposed to state-mandated standardized testing have encouraged a burgeoning opt-out movement.
