Uber drivers in California would be among workers whose status would change from independent contractor to employee, according to a bill passed by that state’s Assembly this week.

The bill, which now goes to the state Senate, would entitle workers to a minimum wage and workers comp, among other protections, The Associated Press reported.

“Big businesses shouldn’t be able to pass their costs onto taxpayers while depriving workers of the labor law protections they are rightfully entitled to,” the news service quoted the Democratic Assemblywoman who authored the bill as saying.
