Life of a List

Explanation of Civil Service Exam Lists

There are two categories of eligible lists: Open Competitive and Promotion. They result from exams administered by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. The time it takes from when you take an exam to the publication of the list resulting from it varies greatly, sometimes a year or more.

An eligible list is first MADE PUBLIC by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. This is a preliminary listing, subject to verification of veterans' and legacy credits, and no one is hired from the list until it is ESTABLISHED.

Every week, The Chief-Leader publishes the eligible lists that have been MADE PUBLIC or ESTABLISHED by DCAS in their entirety. A subscriber interested in a specific list can call it up in our search engine by entering the title and number: e.g. "Police Officer 4310." Once you have the list open, you can look up your name to see your score and where you placed on the list. On a PC, for example, type "Control F" and enter your name in the search box that appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen and then press enter.
