Advocates of the Fire Department’s efforts to diversify its ranks are urging several hundred African-American and Latino applicants who took the Firefighter exam to follow up and either pay the $30 non-refundable fee or complete the form for the required waiver by Aug. 6.
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services confirmed that 714 of the 46,000 test-takers have failed to resolve the fee issue. The FDNY confirmed the unresolved applications involved primarily 406 African-American—406—and Latino—262—candidates. All Firefighter candidates have to pay the application fee or get the waiver before they can move on to the next stage of the hiring process.
