Deadline Nearing For Victim Compensation Fund Tied to 9/11

With just a few days left until the Oct. 3 deadline, advocates are delivering a simple message to those reluctant to register with the Victim Compensation Fund for their Sept. 11-related illnesses: do it for your families.

Rescue and recovery workers can be slow to seek such benefits, dismissing their illnesses as too trivial and denying that they could worsen with age, eventually requiring out-of-pocket costs or lost wages. But advocates, including Uniformed Fire Officers Association President Alexander Hagan, stressed that it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially since the fund provides your family with aid if you die from a Sept. 11-related disease.
